先日、とても嬉しい出来事がありました。
なんと…しなやか文庫のコンタクトフォームから一通のメール（はじめてのメールです）が届いたのです！ ぱちぱちぱち ^^
それは、『Start something new』の記事内で書いた「It’s never too late to start!」という言葉を見てある一つの詩を思い出しました、という内容のものでした。
その詩とは、サミュエル・ウルマンの『Youth』。

Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind.
It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees,
it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions,
it is the freshness of the deep springs of ilfe.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease.
This often exists in man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years . We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles soul.
Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what’s next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is wireless station, so long as it receives message of beauty, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

『青春』 サミュエル・ウルマン （和訳）
青春とは人生のある時期を指すのではなく、精神の在りかたを指すのです。
優れた創造力、たくましい意志、燃えるような情熱、 臆病な弱い心を打ち破る勇気、困難に負けない冒険、このような心の在り方を青春と言うのです。
人は年齢を積み重ねるだけで老いるのではなく、生きていく希望を失った時、初めて老いるのです。
年月は皮膚にしわを増やすが、生きる情熱をなくすと、その人の心にしわが増えるのです。
人は、七十歳であろうと、十六歳であろうと、 心に変化を求め続け、万物への尊敬の念を抱き、決してへこたれず、子供のような探究心と生きる喜びを持ち続けば、その人は青年です。
人は信念を持つことによって若々しく、疑念を抱き続けると老いてしまう。
人は自信を持つことによって若々しく、臆病に生きることによって老いてしまう。
希望を持つ限り若々しく、落胆して生きることによって老いてしまう。自然の美しさ、神の恵み、人間の勇気の力を偉大なものと考える限り、人の若さは失われることはありません。悲しみが心を覆い、深い憎しみに心を固く閉ざしてしまった時に、人は老い、やがて神にすがるしかなくなってしまうのです。

この詩はウルマンさんが78歳のときに書いたもので、あのマッカーサー元帥や松下幸之助さんも座右の銘としていたそう。
最近旧友と会う機会があり、毎日笑って過ごしていた学生時代を思い返しては「青春だったなぁ…」なんて遠い目をしながらぼんやりとしていた私ですが、この詩を読んだときにハッとさせられました。
“青春” という言葉にはとてつもなくキラキラした輝きがあるけれど、それは年齢が若いときだけに許された特別なものではないんですよね。「生きる情熱をなくすと、その人の心にしわが増える」、まさにこの言葉の通り。あの人もあの人も、私の周りの若々しい先輩方はみな、心にほとばしる情熱を持ちながらいくつになっても人生を楽しんでいるように感じます。
慌ただしく過ぎていく毎日のなかで忘れかけてしまっていた大切なことを、この詩が思い出させてくれました。これからは毎年手帳の使い始めにこの詩を書き写し、いつまでも“本当の若さ”を忘れずに過ごしていこうと思います。メールで教えてくださった方、本当にありがとうございました〜！
